I came across this article and found it very interesting:

Why Your Boss Is Wrong About You

This is also an argument for tenure since an employee should be able to raise concerns without fearing they will be fired.

Personally I agree with 9, 8, 3, and 1 the most. I completely disagree with #7. I had a job where the work area was designed for standing and it sucked. The best thing was when we moved and got a sitting workspace.

“Management by objectives works if you first think through your objectives. Ninety percent of the time you haven’t.”

— Peter Drucker

While it is sometimes necessary to operate reactively the better method would be to have a long term vision and then be proactive in moving towards that goal. All too often I see people making business decisions with no thought to the big picture. It is very frustrating, since some actions that are done without thinking about the future can have a serious negative effect later on. Spend some time thinking about your vision for the future and then act in ways that will get you to where you want to be.

I came across this quote from Ross Perot that I wanted to share

Lead and inspire people. Don’t try to manage and manipulate people. Inventories can be managed but people must be lead.

I believe that people want to be inspired and want to have the opportunity to do bold and new things. If a leader is too busy managing and manipulating then there is no room for inspiration or change.

There are a few things that really can help make a workplace more manageable. To me the most important thing is to remember that people are people, not cogs or widgets. If the organizational culture treats people as interchangeable pieces of a machine it can be very demoralizing. Having a culture that values and respects each individual  it can go a long way to improving morale. People want to make a difference and feel that they matter. By ignoring this, organizations encourage their own demise.
