This edition of Worker Wednesday I thought I’d highlight this statement from AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka (source):

Brothers and sisters, our vision for America is on the line. It’s a vision of a better, stronger future, a renewal of the American Dream—the dream that all of us can earn a fair portion of the good things in life, time with our families, an education for our children, a voice on the job, a comfortable retirement—even if we’re not rich.

The American Dream. Along similar lines was the suggestion that $75,000 is the perfect salary for happiness. Having the means to earn a living wage, whatever that may be, is the American Dream. It’s not the amount per se, but the fact that there is a point at which one no longer has to worry about covering essential bills and other costs and can start saving money and even *gasp* going on vacation.

As the rich hoard more and more wealth for themselves we must join together to ensure that the rest of us can attain a big enough piece of the pie to sustain ourselves. As far as I’m concerned, the rich can stay rich, just be a little less rich so the rest of us can not have to worry about how we are going to pay our bills.

“The American cultural ideal of the self-made man, of everyone standing on his own feet, is as tragic a picture as the initiative – destroying dependence on a benevolent despot. We all need each other. This type of interdependence is the greatest challenge to the maturity of individual and group functioning.”  –Kurt Lewin

I read an article on leadership styles recently. The two leadership styles I have predominantly had over me are Authoritarian and Delegative. According to this quiz my style is Participative. That makes sense and I feel that is accurate. I believe in finding common ground upon which to build upon.

“Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.” -St. Francis of Assisi

On the 9th anniversary of 9/11 it seems important to remember that we cannot base our society on anger, hate, and fear. Living a life based on love and acceptance may not be easier, but it can lead to a safer and better world.

If you use Google’s GMail for your email this may be of some interest. GMail recently introduced Priority Inbox as an automated tool to help you sort your email. I gave it a try and it does not work well for me since I already have a significant number of filters set up and very few messages wind up in my inbox. However, if you do not filter your mail and keep pretty much everything in your inbox, this might be something very useful for you.
